What is the best open source AI coding assistant?
There is no single best one: it depends where you work. In the terminal, Aider, opencode, Gemini CLI and Codex CLI are the usual picks; inside VS Code or JetBrains, Cline, Kilo Code and Continue. All eight are open source, so you can read the code, and most let you bring your own model, including local ones. The tool is free; the model behind it usually is not.
What counts as open source here?
The assistant itself (the editor extension or command-line tool) has its source published under a license listed above, and the repository is not archived. Hosted services around a tool, such as cloud versions or paid plans, can still be closed. Licenses and repositories can change, so check the repo before you depend on one.
